Here is what Ross had to say about Super Kmart in Mexico
"Super Kmart Centers in Mexico were launched in 1994 with the opening of 2 stores in the cities of Cuautitlán Izcalli and San Mateo, both suburbs of Mexico City. 2 more stores opened in the spring of 1995 in the cities of Tlalnepantla, another suburb of Mexico City, and Cuernavaca, an hour south of Mexico City. The stores were almost identical to their US counterparts in both looks and products they carried, with the exception of a few food departments, for example, the Tortilleria, a department where fresh corn tortillas could be bought, and the salchichoneria, a kind of deli/butcher shop where customers can haggle with the butcher. These stores were a joint venture between Kmart and El Puerto de Liverpool, a Mexican company that operates high end department stores, like a Macy’s or Bloomingdales. There were rumors that Kmart had grand plans for their Mexico division, and that they wanted to open 50 new stores over a span of 5 years, when in reality, only 10% of that goal was ever achieved (5 stores) over a span of 3 years. A fifth Mexican Super Kmart was supposed to open in the summer of 1997 in Puebla, east of Mexico City, but Kmart sold off their Mexican superstores to Controladora Comercial Mexicana in March of 1997 to focus more on their stores in the US (** Note: the Puebla store was still under construction when the sale occurred). Four of these stores (San Mateo, Izcalli, Cuernacava, and Puebla) are now a part of the Mexican Hypermarket chain called Mega. The fifth store in Tlalnepantla was torn down in 2004 for a Costco. The street view photo of the former Cuernavaca Super Kmart is incorrect. The one used shows Mega Centro Cuernavaca. The former Super Kmart is Mega Diana Cuernavaca on Mexico 95D. This is the correct location of the former Super Kmart: Mega Diana Mexico 95D, Villas del Lago, Cuernavaca, MOR, Mexico
ReplyDeleteSorry about that. I have fixed the problem.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how the inside of the Super Kmarts look like except the one that was demolished. I'm probably thinking that the inside might've look the same as the one of the US version with the sign of the road sign and store sign saying "Super Kmart Center".
ReplyDeleteNot only Kmart had 5 stores Kmart also had one in Queretaro Mexico.
